As the sun went down, we watched
the teasers being set up over the
cemetery. They looked like huge wire whips, spools, and colanders. They
looked impossibly tangled, silhouetted against the sky, but each
technician knew his from the others.
When it was dark enough,
they switched on the power. Grudgingly, angry,
spirits were pulled from the graves, luminesced brightly in all the
colors of the rainbow, and forced into aerial pirouettes and
pyrotechnics. It was very thrilling, especially for a boy of ten like me.
When it all was over, we cheered until our throats were hoarse and our
hands were numb.
